Pricing during the eclipse of 2017.

We're getting lots of requests for August 2017 from people who are coming to see the eclipse.  People are telling us we should raise our prices.  They say it's a supply and demand kind of thing.  Thoughts anyone?

YES set your cancellation policy to STRICT and raise prices as high as you think you can go. You can always lower them back down later but you will not have to. Millions of people are going to make that road trip for that two day period (night before and night after.)  Maybe have a value added benefit of welder's goggles available for use.

We had the Superbowl last year. Lots of people. Lots of $$$$. Lots of hosts raised their prices big time to cash in.

 

Those hosts stayed empty during the Superbowl 'week'.

 

Hosts who added a reasonable premium, as you might for a major holiday, were booked.

 

Does a solar eclipse have the visitor draw and, as importantly, the lack of accommodation availability, to generate an extraordinary demand/price? It's a "one day wonder" so set a ridiculous price, you have little to loose. Just don't count on that big pay-day.

The difference between the eclipse and another high demand event is LOCATION. For something like a Super Bowl, your exact location doesn't matter, only proximity. But for the solar eclipse, your exact location should set the price. The closer you are to the center of the totality path, the higher prices you can charge. People like me will pay it. There hasn't been a solar eclipse in the United States in 99 years.
