Renters Insurance

Has anyone in the USA (New York) gotten renters insurance for their Airbnb? I don't want to rely on Airbnb's "million dollar coverage." I understand that filing a claim on your own homeowner's insurance can void your insurance.

@Linda1633 Renters' insurance wouldn't cover you.  That covers you when you are renting a space to live in yourself, or it's added to your policy when you are renting out your place for a long period of time with a lease, security deposit - the traditional way.  Your insurance broker can find insurance that covers short-term rentals.  Mine got me covered through Merrimack Mutual.  Many insurance companies don't offer this kind of insurance but it's important to have and it can be found.

Thank you, Ann, for the information.

I asked my insurance broker.  He says I can add on to my present homeowner's insurance for a small fee, but it's limited to 12 weeks a year.  He said if I go over that, it will void my insurance.  I may need another company to cover me. I will suggest switching to Merrimack Mutual.

He went to the Airbnb website and saw their claims of $1,000,000 coverage, but from what I've seen here, it is very difficult to get a payout.  I live in my rental, which has an in-law apartment, and I don't do instant book,  I limit my guests to two adults, and my house rules are very explicit, so I haven't had any problems with parties, etc.  But in the event of an accident, I want my home protected.
