foreign guests and American fixtures

I've had a couple of experiences now with foreign guests who didn't understand how to use an American bathroom--they left the shower curtain out, flooded the bathroom, and then walked off without even telling me about the huge puddles. You can imagine the damage that this does, especially when it isn't mopped up and dried immediately. Is this a common problem, and should I instruct people before they use the shower, whether they need it or not? It seems like a diplomatic issue--I hate to assume incompetence--but I can't afford to have this happen again. Ideas?

Printed out instructions, pinned to the wall.  🙂  I give instructions for the composting toilet and the shower in the treehouse and have the instructions pinned to the doors for the shower and the toilet.

I have addressed this issue by putting a small label maker label in the bathroom asking people not to leave water on the floor. ( some may think it's tacky, but when it happens so often and the molding is swelling....)

it is incredibly disrespectful to leave water sitting on a floor, except for maybe if it is tile. Common sense should dictate this. These guests have actually inflicted involuntary damage.

I also leave the shower liner inside the showers and the pretty curtains outside. I instruct my cleaners to leave it this way as a "HINT" to usage. I do several things like this around the house as a "hint hint"

you could also put specific instructions like this in your online  house manual that they get when they make a reservation.

Good luck, as this is maddening.

A label maker? Genius! I was trying to figure out how to say these things without being a nitpicker with a list of rules. Do you find that when cleaning the adhesive of the label stuff and dirt get stuck under it? This happens with my recycling tag that I just taped on and I have to replace the tape coating weekly.

Absolutely!  Just phrase it as a postive!  "A shower curtain has been provided for your convenience and to protect the flooring from water damage.  Please make sure the curtain is in the basin when you shower, and avoid leaving standing water in the bathroom as it damages the flooring and baseboards."
