Hi, 

I have selected the "strict" cancellation policy.

But I have a guest wanting to book a year in advance...will they have to commit the 50% deposit right now when they reserve?

Do guests pay as soon as they book anything on airbnb?

Great, thank you. So they pay 100% at booking and - under the stict cancellation policy - will only be entitled to 50% as long they cancel up to a week before arrival?

I would have thought they may have more flexibility.

The flexibility (in your case non-flexibility) is with you and the cancellation policy you choose.  Strict is the least flexible policy.
