@Pam112  I hope you are well!

It really depends what you have in your house rules and house manual in terms of how your guests should leave things when they check-out.

If they had particular instructions for how to leave the space and they didn't follow these then I would mention in their review that not all instructions/rules were followed regarding check-out, otherwise you could always mention the mess in your private feedback- it all depends on how they were instructed to leave the space prior to check-out and the level of the mess they left- you don't give much detail about it so tricky to say.

It always helps to sit on a review for a few days if you're unsure how to word it, and see how you feel after that time before you type it up and post it.

Best wishes

Paul.

"XX kept in great communication and was very pleasant. The space was left rather unkempt compared to our past guests and some extra cleaning was required." You could add something like “with just a little more focus on cleanliness these guests would be perfect for Airbnb stays.” Then privately message the guest with specifics on what you found messy and how they can improve in the world of home stays. The guest will have a chance to respond to your review (shown on their profile only) which will usually show their true colors.

Keep it honest, short, and to the point with no emotion. Don’t feel bad about leaving an honest review.

Thank-you for your help. This is the first time that i’ve needed to review a nice but messy guest.

Thanks so much for your ideas. I try to spend time with each review I write , and this is the first time that i’ve had this problem.

@Pam112 First of all you need to do some calculations. Was it worth it to host those guests? How much have you spend on cleaning your property? Are they planning to come back? If they were nice you can let them know in the private section that it would be ice if they could tide up prio to their checkout.

I personally review my guests after analysing each and every aspects that i have mention.

Good luck and happy hosting!!!

Thanks so much for your input. Reviewing guests can be tricky, and your help is appreciated!

@Pam112 The pleasure is mine!

@Pam112 it's always great to have a kind and courteous guest. I would place more emphasis on that, but definitely add an honest blurb about the cleanliness.

@Pam112  Everyone has different standards for what they'd call "pretty messy". I 've seen posts here where hosts were fussed about how the guests left the place and when they describe how it was left, it really didn't seem like any big deal.

If there were towels strewn around, a few bits of garbage that didn't make it into the bin, water slopped around the bathroom, toothpaste splatters on the mirror, a few breakfast dishes left dirty, I'd not mention it all in a review, but might mention it gently in private feedback, since the guests were nice and loved their stay.

If there was cooked on crud on the stovetop, a huge amount of dirty dishes, food strewn around, wet towels wadded up mildewing, that sort of thing, I would mention it in the review.

Somewhat messy guests balance out the ones that leave the place super-clean. I don't think it's worth offending nice guests (who might be repeat customers or refer their friends to your listing) by leaving them a bad review, unless you really wouldn't want to host them again.

Thank-you Sarah! Makes total sense. They were very nice people, and a little extra cleanup work is worth the possibility of a return stay or referrals.
