Hi everyone. I just need some wise advice. I have electric water heater and put very clearly in the listing: short showers, no unreasonable water flow. I also mention it in the amenities limitations. But my recent guest spent all water for herself and complains that there is no more. How should I describe hot water limitation to make it clear to everyone?!
Hi @Yulianna0.
You may also need a laminated sign in the bathroom, near the shower or behind the door. Not HUGE, but clear and visible.
:sweat_droplets: ”A gentle reminder - there is limited hot water, so please use sparingly. :sweat_droplets:
:sweat_droplets: As this is a shared facility, short showers are required. :sweat_droplets:
Thank you. 😊
Choose your own wording. Place it in a handwritten house rules guide for the homestay as well as in the bathroom. If you have washing facilities - also state cold water washes only.
If guests have language difficulties, have it translated into the languages of your main guests.

Thank you, @Cathie19. Honestly I hate to put signs in my own home, but seems to be that it is necessary:( I even mention those things in my questions when they are making booking. Very frustrating
It seems that you have posted limited hot water on your description, so use this as a learning tool for future guests, I would highly recommend reminding them with a airbnb message the day of their arrival, and also if you greet them in person letting them know again. I always use guests feedback as an opportunity to improve my listing and future guests travel experience:)
( You can also have a note in the bathroom explaining the limited hot water).
@Rubén16, I’m afraid that I will start showing them how to use water. No way to make people read. A bit offensive but I’ll try to do it in a funny way.
Unfortunatelly I can’t improve my listing with this issue. 80lt should be more than enough for 2 people...
@Yulianna0. Place a big smiley 😃 😊 over the corner of a posterOr small sign, to let the guest know you are friendly! Lol... It doesn’t need to be big, in fact small is best!
There is a device called ''shower manager'' you can fit which allows five or ten minutes of showering - as you decide, thens emits an alarm that gives the user a one minute left warning before it reduces the flow to a trickle, afterwards it takes five minutes before the shower can be reused at full flow.
A bit severe, works better than a laminated sign - only if you have real ongoing issues it should be considered.
Thank you, @Elena87. I don’t think that I want to torture my guests with such restrictions:) I think that it depends on how people are used to use water. Guests from dry countries or those who pay a lot for water are very careful.
common sense is rare nowadays I am affraid... you can write it in your listing description, tell them, put the note in a bathroom.... but they will still book and then complain.
We have unlimited hot water through gas instant water heater... BUT ... it takes about 30 seconds until the hot water from the heater in the hallway arrives to the faucet. The temperature is adjustable by reducing/increasing the water flow and of course by repositioning the faucet handle.
And what our guests do?
They open the faucet, see the water is cold ,close it and then complain how they couldn't shower as there were no hot water! Or... they open the faucet at the full blast, put the plug in a bath tub and leave it to fill. Of course when they return the temperature of the water is not hot and then they complain in a review.
And yes, we got 2 such reviews in 2 weeks and yes, we have illustrated user manual how to use the simple faucet but of course nobody looks at it. Or think. Or call us. They just hit us with a bad review.
I don't know how to fight stupidity any more... I am so tired of it 😞
@Yulianna0@Branka-and-Silvia0 As my husband says "YOU CAN"T FIX STUPID".................its bad.
I had a young woman message me that she had ONLY showered 30 mins and no more hot water now. I almost cried - her boyfriend couldn't shower - I said, we are NOT a hotel, there is limited hot water with our tank - they must stagger taking showers or take shorter showers. Who is that nasty or dirty that it takes 30 mins to get clean.
What's the matter with people. so entitled.
I've been doing mission work in Africa and Mexico for over 16 yrs. so this is more than sickening to me.
I'm just glad I am in the house and not in the cottage - I can not hear that water just running down the drain and I think of those precious ones in Africa carrying a 5 gal. jug of nasty water on their head for miles. This is the most difficult part of hosting for me, if I am honest. ......I almost want to put that device to limit but I know it would be a battle with people and their OVER comsumption and use. Sorry I'm ranting..... best regards, Clara
you read my mind... I've never been to Africa but I've seen it on TV and I am aware of global heating and overcomsuption of all resources . But I didn't realized how bad it is until I started hosting !
In Croatia we are not wastefull simply because our living standard is low and utilities are very expensive so we all pay attention how much electricity, water, gas etc... we spend. I am shocked when I see how careless some of my guests from developed countries are... 😞 Just one example - I turn on my A/C maybe 20 hours/per year. My guests use it from April till October non stop. Enough said.
@Branka-and-Silvia0, that’s even worse than mine:( Today I just shown great surprise on my face. “Oh, don’t tell me that your girlfriend left you without shower!” Still don’t know what review I’ll get from them. And on top they forgot to return the keys... Rrrrr
@Yulianna0, the long shower is honestly one of my pet hates - we do have water restrictions here and water (and gas to heat it) is very expensive. I list it in my house rules, I reiterate it in my house info in my guest manual and I have stickers in my shower asking them to keep their showers short. I even have a little 4-minute timer in my shower to prompt them to do so. But some people still ignore this and enjoy their 20 minute showers - what they do in there is utterly beyond me!
At least your guest is actually IN the shower..... I had a few guests who would turn the shower on and then (leave the bathroom door open while they) walk around getting ready for their shower, including things such as applying wash-off type face pack and waiting for it to dry.....anywhere from a couple mins up to 10, before shutting the bathroom door.
And laundry at full load setting when there are only 7~8 items even when counting each sock separately!!!!
Drove me and Henry crazy.
