I have some friends who came in last night and are staying in my AirBNB here in Costa Rica for a week. I gave them a discount so their part is $419. The cleaning fee is $30. And AirBNB's 3% is $13,47.
Grand total $435.53
HOWEVER...They just texted me. Their AirBNB account says they were charged $506.92
What the host receives is less than what the guest pays. If they booked it through Airbnb, the guest will pay an Airbnb service fee of 0% - 20% (10-15% in most places), plus occupancy taxes paid to the local government, in addition to your nightly rate and cleaning fee. Most hosts currently pay a 3% Airbnb service fee, which is deducted from the host earnings and isn't shown to the guest. Guests can see the full breakdown of the amount they were charged. This used to visible to hosts too, but is not as transparent as it once was. Ask your friends to look at their trip details for the itemization of what they were charged.
