The Tagging Contributors Problem in Forums Explained: and a Work-around

Thanks to Rob from down under for explaining this issue that has been driving me, and I would think most of us who post regularly, CRAZY and giving us a viable though cumbersome work-around.

I took the liberty of quoting Rob directly from Kenneth in Chicago's thread on the twenty questions

   . . .  you may (or may not) know but, on Tuesday last week the CC computer program suffered some form of corruption. When you tag someone you are not currently tagging the person you think you are! All tags for me are ending up in Robin from Ashburn VA's mail box and the Willow you tagged was an entirely different Willow to the one you thought you were tagging.

If you want to tag someone you must grab their tag from a post that was placed on the forum before last Tuesday week.

You will find a list of the most frequent contributors at either of these pages.

On each page scroll down to Administrator @Lizzie's post and you will see us all grouped together. If you copy a tag from there and post it into your current post, it will end up with the person you require.

The only information other than text that you can supply here is that which you can copy from the CC before Tuesday 30th May.

It is to hoped that the programmers can find a solution to this problem in the not too distant future.

Cheers.....Rob

Why it's taking so long to fix is beyond me.  My guess is it's low priority.

Hi @John1574 ,

I got notified about You tagging me out of the group of 5 people.

I did not get notified though as You did a crowd tagging a couple of days ago.

@John1574

John, you can tag as many people into as post as you like! The option when you hit the @ key will only give you a choice of 5 contributors from those who may be active on that particular thread. This has been the situation since the CC evolved and has been available and there are good valid reasons why it works this way.

@Lizzie has mentioned that she and the team are trying to make an easy way of extending this.

You can however tag as many people as you wish into a post by copying contributors tags from other threads where they are active and posting those copied tags into your thread.

A word of caution though John! A lot of other contributors do not like being dragged into threads they are not active in. Whenever you tag someone into a thread they automatically get an alert every time there is activity in that thread and this leads to frustation if they do not wish to be active in that thread. Can you understand what I am saying John?

Don't tag contributors to simply build up an audience...it's a sure-fire way of making yourself unpopular!

Leave the group tagging to the moderators!

Cheers......Rob

If someone isn't on the list of 5 and they ARE active in the thread, I just put in the @ and their name.

@Sarah977

Thanks, Sarah, that's helpful.  Exactely the info I was looking for.

I will test it out and I  hope it goes to the right person.  The copy and paste option is cumbersome.

I wonder why, if they can list five they can't list all of a threads contributors.

I suppose we should be happy for small miricles, like getting the tagging function back at all.

@Sarah977 🙂
