Up until early this year, we always received emails from Airbnb about enquiries. SInce then; nothing. I have spoken at length with Airbnb but nobody seems to be able to solve the problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes. That's the only way we know that we have an enquiry; apart from constantly checking the site!

Isn't it just easier to download the app? Both OS and Android apps work great. You won't have to check your email constantly.
Also an easier solution, change the email you listed on airbnb, then going to your profile as a host, change the email, you'll get a confirmation email asking to confirm a new email with airbnb.
