Hello our fellow hosts,
We just had our first guests checked-out and overall it is a good experience. I think I have a lot to learn about hosting.
We want to setup a computer for our guests but want to block all the offensive web sites (ex.: porno, radical, etc.), do you have any suggestion for what software we have to install on the computer.
Thank you and appreciate your feedbacks.
Hi...The first question would be why? Everyone travels with a phone or laptop these days and leaving a computer for use by guests is just another item to maintain, etc.
Second: your internet provider usually can apply settings to your service - for example for children. If you feel the need to dictate what adults can use your computer for then that is probably the best option - give them a call to see what they offer. However be aware that anyone with even basic knowledge can usually get around these settings.
Trend micro internet security. Protects agains viruses , malware etc... and has parents control function which you can turn on and setup. One licence is for 3 devices.
I would be interested to read how setting up a computer for guests goes. I had a spare laptop and looked into setting it up as a kiosk terminal so software cannot be installed and nothing is saved to the hard drive after someone logs out. I decided that it was going to be more trouble/liability with zero added revenue, so I wiped the hard drive and donated it to charity instead.
Smart decision 🙂 I didn't even try to offer it.
In 7 months of hosting my guests were able to break simple toaster and filter coffee machine ... some of them didn't know how to use handheld shower, window blinds and Air conditioner. Some didn't know how to get warm water from a tap or how to close double windows ... so I can't even imagine what they would do with a laptop.... omg... !
@Branka-and-Silvia0 Funny you mention broken handheld showers...the holder for mine was just broken today. So I decided to look at what mid-range hotels do. They have fixed shower heads with massage or spray. So hopefully my $15 fixed shower head with massage or spray will last longer than the handheld one did since a fixed showerhead does not have an apparently easy-to-break holder.
wait and see 🙂 ... I just bought new simple shower rose for 5 $ and I hope it will last few months and I have a spare one in a closet.
Important is - everything has to be as simple and budget friendly as possible, no high tech gadgets, people have no time to figure out how to use it. Even the most simple things some of them will break simply because they do not think.
For example a woman left empty inox pot on a hot electric stove and now it is copper-yellow. The other one washed the toaster under tap water. Third one left plastic lid of a teapot on the hot filter machine plate etc... I constantly feel like a big mama taking care of a bunch of kids
