Hi,
Looking for a bit of advice from anyone who may have been in this situation.
I have two students from Kazahkstan staying with me. They are studying at Glasgow University until December and booked to stay at my place for the whole of September
They appear to have opened bank accounts and have used my address for mail to be sent. I received a couple of letters for them today.
However, they didn't ask if they could use my address. Had they asked, I would have said no.
I would have thought the university would have a set-up to deal with this type of situation – perhaps the university being used as a postal address.
It could all be fairly innocent and I appreciate the difficulties young people from countries as far away as the likes of Kazakhstan have.
However, I have concerns about fraud and my address being used for other purposes.
What do people think? What should I do with the mail (the guests are currently out and don't know it has arrived)? Return it to the bank? Should I contact the university? The bank?
Additionally, they mentioned last night that they want to cut short their stay as they feel my place is too far away from the university.
I called Airbnb support but they weren't much help – and said I might want to speak to a lawyer! That might cost a bit...
@Kimberly54 @Robin4 Oh, I see you can pluralize it as well, no problem. So if someone were using it as a derogatory term for a Japanese person, that's not okay, but if you were insulting multiple Japanese people, that seems to be fine 🙂
Sarah, I am only theorising, I have tried, and my knowledge of English expression is extensive but, I can think of no other reason why nips in the singular tense is an unacceptable word.
Cheers.....Rob
@Sarah977, nothing against the Japanese--or insulting anyone here in any **bleeping** way.
For sure.
To enter this entertaining debate, it must be 'banned' because of the offensive term used to describe a Japanese person. In the same way, I would guess the shortform for people from Pakistan is forbidden, too. It is a particularly offensive word in the UK, not far short of the 'n' word.
this has turned into the the most hilarious thread going......It’s the best belly laugh I’ve had all week.
perhaps someone should start a cultural thread about inadvertently causing offence where none is intended!
So all you North Americans oarticukary you ladies out there .......whatever you do, NEVER NEVER NEVER......invite a Scotsman to look at your Fanny Pack?
There is a brilliant you tube clip by a Scots lassie, ( I don’t mean canine Lassie) on Scottish words versus USA words........
I have a tea towel with Scots words on it. I encourage foreign guests to use these words when they are out and about in Glasgow. Aussies are usually right up for it!
Hi @Gordon58
I just love the Aussies....none of this PC s**te from them.
They call a spade a shovel.....no messing.
I just love them to bits!
When in Hawaii we did the tour of Pearl Harbour and of course went aboard the Missouri....the 'Mighty Mo' !
There was a sign adjacent to the boarding gangway that said, amongst other things....'No Fanny Packs"!!
Geeez, I looked at those 18 inch guns that bristled from the decks and thought....you have to be kidin' what's a 'fanny' pack compared to these bazookers!!!!
Cheers.....Rob
@Gordon58, you are kidding, right? I mean, about stereotyping?
You've just been 'nipped!'

PS: yes, I am requesting a reply. 😉
that sound very upper class posh.....a FAHT!
I just tell my kids.......come on then....own up.....Who’s cracked a peanut?
@Victoria567 @Kimberly54 @Letti0 @Sarah977
Oh Victoria.....our eldest grandaughter suffers from moderate autism..she is on the spectrum. She is 5 years old now and has started 'Dynasaur' Kindy!
As part of Fathers day all the children were asked a series of question about their fathers which were put into individual cards the respective fathers would get on Fathers Day....
Are you following me here Victoria?
There were questions like, "what do you like to do with daddy"...."What does daddy do that makes you happy"?
The last question on Madisons card was...."My Daddy smell like?"
Her answer......"Pop-offs" !!!
I don't think my kids ever accused me of smelling like "farts"
Cheers.....Rob
@Robin4, is "pop-offs" Austrailian for farts? We have "Pop-Tarts" over here--it's a sort of flat breakfast jam-filled pastry you cook in a toster (so they "pop UP" when they're done).
Also over here, some people refer to "older" people as "old farts."
If she picked up on that kind of thing, she's probably a pretty smart cookie. (A lot of austics are incredibly smart.)
Things to ponder, Pops!

Oh yes Kim, the last thing you want to be accused of here is doing a 'pop-off'
Hey listen what is it here....the sanitiser alows farts but it won't allow Nips singular.
I could come up with quite an acceptable ditty here.
"Lalalala...the fart came from my bum ha ha!
My crotch said 'oh ho hum'
My bloody smell said, what the hell
It's just another **bleep** ha ha!
Oh well, it didn't quite work.....back to the drawing board!
Cheers.....Rob
Hello @Kimberly54, @Robin4, @Victoria567, @Letti0, @Gordon58,
What a conversation...I have a feeling the bleep function is completely exhausted now! 🙂
So just to clarify, we have a list of words here in the CC that are automatically bleeped out when posted. It might not always be that obvious why this is, but we are on a global community here and some words that are OK in one country can have quite a different meaning in another (I know the example you first mention here Kimberly is the one that comes up most).
I know sometime this might seem a little ridiculous, but this is in place to help protect our community here, so at it's heart it is a good thing.
Thanks,
Lizzie
