How do you file a complaint against a host?

Had a confirmed booking, had already paid, then the host said he wanted $100 in cash on arrival as a surcharge.  We disagreed, but eventually cancelled, since we knew he would eventually cancel us out so he could gouge someone else.

Because we cancelled, we have to eat the service charge.

Two questions:

1) how do we file a complaint against this host?

2) How can we petition to get the host to eat the service charge?

thanks,

Tammy

If in the future you should ever need to cancel because of a host issue (it will probably never happen again, but anyway...) call Airbnb FIRST and let them cancel it for you, they will take appropriate action and you will not have to claim back the service charge.

Better to do it that way around, since you have to contact them anyway. If a host cancels, you get full refund and maybe even a little travel credit as a perk and comfort from Airbnb.

The host, on the other hand, gets slapped with a fine which is a reason why hosts do not want to cancel!

I wish all hosts just got on with doing the job we are here to do, rather than trying on a little scam on the side.

Better luck next time!

@Ethel18   Reading both your review of this host and the host's review of you, plus the host's reviews from other guests and the reviews the host has written for his other guests, it's pretty obvious that you are actually the one who behaved with a sense of entitlement and then wanted others to shoulder the blame. You apparently had your daughters come to stay without informing the host of that intention (it doesn't matter that they are your daughters- any additional guests have to be named and paid for, and there is nothing "creepy" about a host keeping track of how many people are coming and going), you brought your dog without bothering to mention that you were planning to do so, and you insist that your party had nothing to do with the clogged plumbing, even though you have no way of knowing that. Of course the filter was clogged for the whole place if you or your daughters flushed something that shouldn't have been flushed.  But you are apparently someone who will deny that you have any possible responsibility for anything.

Sarah,

If YOU TOOK THE TIME to read my contract, which CLEARLY you did not, it states at the top, myself PLUS THREE GUESTS. So I had every single right to have three of them there.

Jeramiah said that I am allowed to bring my dog, we definietly discussed it, I can PROVE it, I have it in an text from him.

I SPOKE TO HIS FATHER ABOUT THE PLUMBING, whom was there, while Jeramiah was off on the other side of the Country at an Art studio. He told me not to bother him, because he was on a four hour time difference. I have it as PROOF in a text.

I told his father about the plumbing, after his son had come down, looked at it, stuck the plunger in the toilet, then the sink, WITH DISHES no less, then scratched his head, said he would BRB with draino. Never saw him again.

SO, two to three days went by, I was showering at the YMCA, I can prove that too. I WAS THE ONE THAT CALLED A PLUMBER,  NOT THE LAND OWNER. I called the plumber, came back to the rental, and Jeramiah's father came over, said he was sorry about all the plumbing issues, and said, "aren't you are great person, to call for us" then told me, that Jeramiah's house, which is above, because his rental is in a converted garage, was having the EXACT SAME PROBLEMS, AND THAT THE PLUMBER SAID THAT THE FILTER TO THE SEPTIC WAS CLOGGING EVERYTHING.

You, lady, in MEXICO, chimed in, without doing ANY research, shockingly horrible. You do not have oNE FACT right.  ANd then,

AIRBNB just took out TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS, at 5 am this morning, from my account, which was for the month that I WAS NOT THERE, I was forced out because it took them so long to address the issue, was down there for work, and I COULDN'T EVEN BATHE.

My bank is investigating it, paying me back, and yes, we ARE MAKING A CLAIM against this. I have texts, pictures, proof.

You, Sarah, just made an ** of yourself, and made AIRBNB look just as shady as I documented.

I bet you have had multiple law suits against you, because you are thieves.

@Ethel18    You'd lose that bet. You have an issue with a particular host and the way Airbnb is handling it. None of us here work for Airbnb, and where we happen to reside is immaterial. You had a problem with a place you booked and therefore all hosts are thieves, in your view.

Your review, an outlier among all the very good reviews this host has had, and your posts here, say more about you than they do the accomodation.

I WANT TO BE BLOCKED PERMANANTLY FROM AIRBNB. I DO NOT EVER WANT TO SEE THEIR EMAILS SENT TO ME, I HATE THEM. THERE IS NO WAY TO BLOCK MY EMAIL, SO I CANNOT, BUT I WISH THEY WOULD VANISH COMPLETELY. ****

We are going thru a concelation now. We booked an apartment in Crete Greece. After farther checking we find that the building they advertised in pictures is not the actual building. The actual building is across the street. It's very old, dirty looking, not acceptable at all!!!! How did we find out?we have relatives there and we send them to check it out. I reported it to Airbnb and their response was that they took the picture from the balcony to show the view. ARE YOU LAUGHING RIGHT NOW? And why didn't they post a picture of their building? Of course because no one would book it!!!! THAT IS FALSE ADVERTISING!!!! We should get all our money back!!!

Airbnb is not helping us at all!!! They are refunding half of our money. Why? We cancelled 3 hrs after we booked It. After reading all your complaints I see Airbnb is not a company I would ever dial with.

PS. We booked it for 28 days in the sum of 1,350.00

HOw do I make a complain about a host?

We have just encountered a problem with a host a that advertised their apartment for a pecific price once paid she requested an alteration which was actually her doubling the amount advertised. We refused to accept the alterations and in tern she refused to cancel our booking. We have now had to pay a cancellation fee. How do I get our refund for this fee? What she did not false advertising?

@Cynthia431 Have you contacted Airbnb? If not, do so ASAP. This is not acceptable for a host to do, this a bad hosting.  If they want to raise the price and the guest doesn't agree, it is up to the host to cancel, not the guest. You really should have contacted Airbnb as soon as she tried to double the price, they would have either forced her to accept it at the advertised price or cancelled it for you with full refund. So call them now. Contact info for Airbnb is listed in a large post on the first page of this Help forum.

Airbnb friends, we were cancelled on by our host on the DAY OF ARRIVAL with no explanations and zero help from Airbnb who said they would help us rebook (they did not), so we scrambled, spent 4 hours on our flight over on airplane wifi, luckily found alternative lodging in Kauai, Hawaii between Christmas and New Years -- which by the way is a sold out and expensive time of year!!!  We paid $200 a night originally... day of arrival was $750 and we had to split stay between two places which affected our vacation even further.  Now, Airbnb refuses to pay the $2470 additional we had to pay out of pocket.  Guess what the host had to pay for cancelling on me?  $100!!  That's it?!  Why wouldn't a host cancel if they got a better offer over the busiest time of year!!!!!!  How come host's aren't held accountable, but I'm now suffering because of his neglect.  And WHY won't Airbnb make it right for us?!

We cancelled our booking the same day we booked it. It was cancelled within 72 hours but we receieved a generated email from the host that we will only be getting P500. The amount that was debited is P2,500. Why can we not get the full refund when we followed the cancellation policy?

I missed the cut off date to review a bad experience we had. It was that bad I couldn’t deal with it til a month later.

How do I do so now. I responded to something that was sent to me and it didn’t get bounced back but I never got a response. I know the likelihood of getting some money back is slim but the host should not be in business anymore.

its a completely false ad and no one else should risk their precious vacation in anticipation for such a destination that is not.

It was so bad we had no hesitation to pay another 300 and get a last minute hotel over Christmas. We are not rich. It was that bad.

@Natasha212 It's really too bad you didn't leave a review to warn other prosepctive guests. There's nothing you can do about it now, there's no way to review the place once the 14 day mark is past. Did you talk to Airbnb about the place? They may not delist it, but they may contact the host and read them the riot act.

They won't tell you they've done this, so don't bother asking them, they won't share that information. You can go to the host's profile and flag it, I believe.

I hate hearing about these horrible places and terrible hosts that have the balls to charge money for something totally unacceptable.
