Good morning from snowy Northern Michigan.
My name is Dave and we are having our first guest check out today. There were no issues or questions that I am aware of. But I wasn't completely comfortable with the guest having to use the app to communicate with me. It seems like it would be quicker response time if the guest had my phone number. Airbnb has suggested that all communication go through the app, so I am wondering if giving the guest my phone number would be a mistake?
Thank you!

The guest already has your phone number on the reservation and you have theirs (below the 'message' button). Many guests don't realise this.
Before a booking is finalised you should avoid communicating off platform, as you could be scammed or placed in an unsafe position (there are scams specifically targeting new hosts).
After a booking is finalised it's somewhat less risky, but it's still better to try to keep communication inside the app. If anything goes wrong, Airbnb and Aircover will only look at what was recorded in the app.
So the guest does have your number and can use it if really necessary, but it's usually better for everyone to keep things on platform.

As you're in the US I should add that the new temporary phone numbers feature may already apply to your bookings. Here's how they work, but the same logic as explained above still applies, whether it's a temporary or 'real' number.
I was in Michigan last year in October, and did not get a chance to experience snow there! How much are you getting at the moment?
The information Shelley shared should help you decide how you can approach this kind of situation in the future, but it would be great to know what you think of her suggestions. Communication is such a key part of welcoming guests, I'm glad you've come to the community to brainstorm ideas on how to best proceed! 🌟
Have a lovely day,
Emilie
