Hi everyone, I’m Mukta! My son Akhilesh and I run a cozy Airbnb tucked into the peaceful lower foothills of the Himalayas. It’...
As hosts, a big portion of our job is communicating with guests and meeting their needs. We all receive requests that seem rather unusual, and I would love to know what your weirdest request or complaint has been?
Recently, someone complained that our toilet seat wasn't comfortable enough...... It is just the standard one out there on the home depot market....
My two weirdest are:
1) The guest who complained that the exterior of my home was “depressing” and embarrassed her in front of her fellow guests.
2) A different set of guests who were very put off by my neighborhood’s lack of sidewalks. Sure, I’ll get right on that one.
@Susan653 I had to look at your listing after this and it is so cute! In Mystic...depressing?? And how exactly did it embarrass her in front of her friends? Did the house tell an off color joke?
I am fascinated by this feedback!
I feel for you! I had a guest complain that our neighborhood wasn't affluent enough! Geez Louise. It's a former coal railroad/coal transport town in Appalachia... So I added to my photograph collection an aerial Google Earth view and a picture of the mountains from the backyard that shows neighborhood houses in the view shed as you look at the mountains. (And, yes, she complained about the latter in her review.) BTW she also mentioned that the front of the house is vacant - true, as we haven't finished renovating it yet. But we didn't work on it while she was there, so she had the whole place to herself as advertised, and it was very very quiet for her. Still not sure why she saw fit to mention THAT in the review, either.
I had one complain that she "thought" she saw milder UNDER the bathroom vanity top. Really? What were you doing under the vanity anyway? It was my first 4 star 😞
I recently had a very nice guest book my rental to attend a music fest which was an hour away from my listing. When I informed him of the distance he replied that he knew how far away it was and he was ok with the distance. When he reviewed the rental he gave 3 stars for “location”. I reached out to him to inquire how I might do a better job describing my location. He responded he gave me a 3 because my rental was an hour away from his fest! Then he apologized, since he knew before booking the distance, but the damage was done as far as effecting my rating! Pple are so weird sometimes!
Not a complaint, but a suggestion in our house manual that we should provide filtered water in the fridge. We have filtered water in our fridge. I made a large label that says FILTERED WATER. I put it in the fridge above the outlet that has a label already saying FILTERED WATER. SMH.
Another request was to turn the hot tub off so they could enjoy nature sounds. I asked what hours they would like it off as it needs to run sometime to keep it fresh (plus it’s not noisy). They says morning, evening and at night.
I complied but was concerned they would then complain that the hot tub wasn’t hot enough! 🤣 Thank goodness they did not.
Recent guests asked for water toys, an electronic pump and a badminton set ???? We do not provide these. ??? Odd.
We had a guest complain not once, but twice, that the listing "has only 1 bathroom." Of course, he was the one that booked a 1 bathroom home. This was the kind of person you could tell was convinced he was the smartest person in the room. We all know the type. After the 2nd complaint and when all communication had pretty much broken down, I reminded him that this was the listing HE BOOKED.
Later on, after leaving us a 4-star review, he tried to extort me in order to remove it. He also had this "I'm rich" undertone to pretty much all he said. But now you want/need money back? And are going to attempt to extort me for it?
Got the review removed, blocked him, case closed, next!
This guy was so awful and has probably pulled this schtick before. Not this time. We've defeated our fair share of guests over the years, but this victory was the sweetest.
@Richard531 yusss! The sweet taste of success. Love it and more power to you! Those people make my blood boil!
@Richard531 if he was so wealthy, why didn’t you book your house with multiple bathrooms!
It is so ridiculous when guests complain about the obvious in the review, things already in the listing.
One of the oddest things I've had said was that the property had dirt around the outside, ah yes, it's called the garden and quite common around many houses.
The guest was used to living in apartment complexes and of age an where she wasn't used to nature been so readily accessible.
I had a guest who complained that she ordered online groceries to be delivered to the listing but the delivery guy couldn't find the entrance door, so asked if I could intervene.
The delivery guy was given my number and called up, I checked it was the correct address as there is one street in the city with a rather similar address which can cause confusion to the unwary. After a little unfruitful toing and froing I asked the deliverer to take a pic and send it so I could try and make out where he was.
Looked at the photo on the phone, and asked the guy if he was in Moscow by any chance..only our listing is in Saint Petersburg, 700km away. He was. I called back the guest, ''you know that address you gave...''

I believe that much of the nonsense comes from a really stupid question posed byAirbnb in the guest review instructions: “Tell the host what you loved about their place. What could they do better?”
There are people who think this is an exam and they MUST answer every question or they won’t get a good grade.
So I suppose a good review would be, “I liked that the house had indoor plumbing, but it would be much nicer if I didn’t have to pay or follow any rules, and they moved it to Tahiti.”
Ah, this thread is good for laugh!
I will start with a few and will come back with more
