Dishonest bookings

Hi -  can anyone give me any tips on how to ensure the person that books the home is also the person staying? We have had several instances where someone other than the guests book the home and in those cases the guests are often disrespectful, loud, steal from the home. I’m assuming the guests have gotten bad reviews or are underage and and can’t book themselves so are having a parent or friend book for them.  Very frustrating.

Thanjs in advance!

During your messaging you can remind the guest of your house rules and Airbnb protocol and tell them they can cancel within 48 hours for a full refund from Airbnb if they cannot abide by both. One of the most important protocols is that the booking individual be present. They are the responsible person if anything goes wrong. If they give you a story about how they will arrive later, not at booking, tell them your insurance requires the person booking to be present at all times. In your house rules state that you want a list of names of additional guests, who will be required to show ID.

Are you present when they arrive? If so you can deny entry if the person booking is not present, if you are not there to hand over a key you are pretty much not in control and and are open to more trouble. Hosts who seem to have these problems usually allow groups and many are not on the property or even nearby. Short minimum stays, instant booking, and last minute booking also seem to go hand in hand with problems from what I read in the community center.

I have had 3 such bookings and on each one, when I learned the booker was booking for a second party I required that person to send me a copy of their photo ID and be given access to my email, so I could make sure they agreed to house rules  and could communicate with them. The better communication you receive from a guest the better. Good luck.

@Holly301    I always add a line or two in my messages saying,  only the people named on the reservation are allowed access. No third party bookings allowed. You could also add that showing ID may be required to gain entrance.  I have asked people in the past to set up their own accounts if it is a third party booking, no one has had a problem with it.  Note: Airbnb do not cover 3rd party bookings if there is damage or any problems.

This is really interesting as I have this from time to time.  We are near a castle wedding venue and occasionally have folks booking for friends or family but we don’t know they’re not staying there themselves.

I’m going to add a line or two in my ‘thank you for your booking’ message outlining that 3rd party bookings aren’t allowed.

@Amanda660 You might consider adding "Please have your guests (or employee) book directly." No need to miss the booking completely. I only added "employee", since 2 of my 3rd party bookings were from HR managers, seeking accommodations for an employee.

Why are you accepting third party bookings @Holly301  it's against Airbnb's T&Cs.

When you respond to a booking; confirm you don't accept third party bookings and that if it looks like it is a business booking they need to use Airbnb at Work (I think it is called).

If someone turns up whose photo and name doesn't match the person who booked - call airbnb and ask them to cancel.
