Guest wants to cancel because kid is sick

Hello,

I have a guest who is supposed to check-in this weekend. She informed me on Monday that her child is sick with hand, food and mouth disease and wanted to cancel. I told her that I won't be able to cancel as I have a strict cancellation policy. I have also pre-paid accomodation for my family for this weekend as the apartment was booked. She replied to say that she decided to come anyway. My concern is that I have a 2.5 year old and I'm not sure I want to allow another child with a sickness to contaminate surfaces or toys - as this is how the virus spreads. What are my options here?

I'd definitey call AirBNB and get them to cancel this without penalty to you.  Don't cancel yourself unless they refuse (and you're willing to take the penalty to avoid them showing up) - but seriously, AirBNB better have your back on this one!

That child should be in quarantine as Foot & Mount disease is very contagious, the general advice is to stay at home, I think your guest should do the same and suck up the expense rather than worrying you into cancelling, its sound like a ruse to me and she must be very aware of how contagious Hand Foot & Mouth disease is, and she’s showing a complete lack of reasonability by traveling under those circumstances.

Hopefully we won’t have a pandemic of Foot & Mouth disease on the Airbnb site after this post.

tell them that they can not come with a sick child bc you have a child too and can be infected.

As this is not your fault they have to cancel their stay and deal with Airbnb according to your cancelation policy and extenuating circumstances ABB policy.

Whatever they do - do not let them check in with a sick child and do not cancel or agree that they cancel on your behalf!

Thank you for all the replies! I have chatted with Airbnb twice as well as the guest asking her to alter the dates until they are healthier (she lives in Switzerland so a drive to Munich is quite possible depending on her schedule) but she is refusing and saying, "I fully understand your concern but he is doing much better. If the red dotts are no longer filled with liquid then he should not pass it to others anymore." I'm not trying to be an over bearing mom but I know how contagious this disease is - esp since her son just contracted it on Monday. She also said, "Also I do not see a reason to cancel the trip from our side since he is really doing fine again. If you decide to cancel then it is your choice." Airbnb wants to cancel on my behalf which means I have 48hrs to miraculously find another guest or will be out the money I've had to spend on this weekend being out of my apartment. Oh well...
