At first they asked us to stay and just pay them the $50 cancellation fee, then they said nevermind they would honor this reservation and cancel their listing going forward after this one
That doesn't sound like scamming so much as just someone who doesn't know what they are doing, but you know the situation best, @Erik246. Don't get stuck doing something that doesn't feel right. Give Airbnb a call if whatever is going on is not good.
