Had a confirmed booking, had already paid, then the host said he wanted $100 in cash on arrival as a surcharge. We disagreed, but eventually cancelled, since we knew he would eventually cancel us out so he could gouge someone else.
Because we cancelled, we have to eat the service charge.
Two questions:
1) how do we file a complaint against this host?
2) How can we petition to get the host to eat the service charge?
thanks,
Tammy

If in the future you should ever need to cancel because of a host issue (it will probably never happen again, but anyway...) call Airbnb FIRST and let them cancel it for you, they will take appropriate action and you will not have to claim back the service charge.
Better to do it that way around, since you have to contact them anyway. If a host cancels, you get full refund and maybe even a little travel credit as a perk and comfort from Airbnb.
The host, on the other hand, gets slapped with a fine which is a reason why hosts do not want to cancel!
I wish all hosts just got on with doing the job we are here to do, rather than trying on a little scam on the side.
Better luck next time!
Is one required to have insurance to cover the guests.?

I have never had any problems with many stays around the world with airbnb...until: recently (September 2019) my adult son and I stayed 11 days at an airbnb location near Pula, Croatia. The place was fine, with an outdoor patio for eating and an outdoor shower, near a little beach (15 mins walk) for swimming, and 20 minutes by local bus to the wonderful town of Pula. The owner, Goran, lived above the place, and all was fine, I thought. We are tidy people, washed and cleaned the kitchen after every day use, recycled everything in the 4 different recycling bins, and in general kept the place very clean and tidy. (I also cleaned a very dirty and partially stopped up shower drain...pulled out masses of hair and sticky stuff from the shower drain with a can opener...this had probably been in that condition for months, if not years.) We bought new washing up sponges, and I used the old dirty one Goran had in the kitchen to thoroughly clean the shower and the toilet...and left it in the bathroom for cleaning purposes. On the morning we left, I cleaned the cooker, washed all the dishes, dried them and put them in their proper shelves, swept the floor, shook out the rug, etc. I also dried and polished all work surfaces, the cooker top, dish draining area, etc. We left some good quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar...as well as some fruit and a few edible things in the fridge...all neatly in packages. On the morning we left, Goran came down while we were there, and had a look around...so he must have seen how clean it was. We shook hands and left for the airport. When we got the report, Goran wrote that we had left a "very dirty" kitchen...which was a total lie...and why? (It was probably cleaner overall than when we arrived.) Goran did seem a bit "off balance," but this statement was untrue to the extreme, so I think he is a bit crazy; and if I could, I would advise people not to stay there. (We also found a Russian's wallet and phone which had been thrown into the bushes...as we were walking to the beach; obviously this had been stolen, and we gave it to Goran...bet the police never got it!)
I am recently booking for a air BNP host.
I have told that I will arrive late and sent the message.
Around 11:00 pm, when I am about to arrive to her she said check in time close and replied me rudely.
I said why you didnot inform me earlier, she said I dont need to tell anything.
and never gave my money back. I am woundering around the unfamiliar place for an hour to get an hotel.
When I report to Air BNP, nothing effective was done.
I would like to share this in order not to get the same experience like me and to avaoid those kind of host. In addition, there is no protection against our money on Air BNP platform.
avoid airbnb at all costs. It is a big scam.
100% agree. never in my life again.
100% agree, never ever will use airbnb in my life!
Hi how if I want to make complaint regarding the host
I would like to complain against a host who rejected my booking on the discriminated the basis of my race and familial situation. I have been left very shocked and hurt by the host who asked personal questions about my family and then refused to respond to any further messages.
@Batul1 What sort of questions did the host ask? And how did he know what your race was? Was this a declined booking, or a cancelled one? If it was just declined, FYI, hosts can't see a guest's profile photo before a reservation is confirmed, so a host wouldn't be able to discriminate racially based on your photo.
I ask you to clarify a bit, because a host inquiring abut "familial situation" is pretty vague and I know that there are countries in the world where it's illegal for an unmarried couple to book a room together, so if it was the host inquiring about that, it may have been justified because the host would be liable for prosecution by accepting such a booking.
Similar thing happened to me. Also host traced me where i lived before and contacted those host and told me she will make sure i will not find place to live. All after learning from cleaner about my race.
So my boyfriend and I stayed at a cottage in Newfane Vermont in October 2019 ..It was totally different from the pictures shown BUT we stayed anyway because we needed the time away so badly!!..We were greeted by the host when we first showed up but she was QUICK and out the door !! lol..she didn't even show us around !!.. Once we looked around ourselves we realized WHY she left so quickly !!.. She was friendly but nervous !..Anyway to make a long story short .. We stayed the two nights then called (like we were supposed to) to let her know we were leaving ..no answer !!.. I think she was afraid of what we had to say about the run down cabin that was falsely advertised!!.. When we got home we left a review and wrote something nice about the host but was HONEST about the cabin not being what it was shown in the pictures !!..broken sliding glass door with no lock .. had to use a piece of wood to stop it from opening ..didn't feel that safe !!lol ..There was no nice new deck coming from the bedroom as advertised !!.. it was actually boarded up and falling apart !!..The furniture was very old and outdated ..but was brand new in the pictures ..she never updated her photo's !!.. So I mentioned that in the review and said it wasn't worth what we paid .. and it was NOT !!..The only thing that was new was the hot tub and we enjoyed that ..and even wrote that in the review !!..SO I got a call this morning from our host ( 3 months later ) lol ..and she was not happy !!..She told me that I shouldn't "treat a host that way" ????..and that I must be a Democrat LOL which I am NOT but any means !!lol ..and went on about the door being "old world" so she can't buy a lock !!..she actually didn't sound "very healthy" in her message ..BUT I am NOT happy with that phone call and didn't deserve it !! ..I would like my money back or partial at least !!.. It was false advertisement and that is SO WRONG !!.. but I was going to let it go UNTIL I got that angry rude phone call !!.. Will I be able to do that or is it too late ??
@Mare346 You decided to make the best of an inaccurate listing, stayed the whole time, didn't report the inaccuracy to Airbnb, enjoyed the hot tub, etc, now, 3 months after the fact, you want a refund just because the host made a nasty phone call? No, just no.
Considering you decided to stay anyway, and wrote an honest review, that was the appropriate way to deal with it. The host sounds a bit unhinged- block her number so she can't harrass you any more, and move on.
There are all kinds of unpleasant encounters in life- it's best not to give them too much energy. And getting a refund doesn't counteract a nasty phone call. The time to ask for a refund was when you arrived to a place that was not as advertised, but you chose not to cancel and it sounds like you had a decent weekend anyway.
Both your review, and other guest reviews of an inaccurate and run-down listing will be this host's karma. It'll likely keep her from getting future bookings, or get her delisted.
Thanks for getting right back to me Sarah ..Yeah you're right !!..I should of taken care of it from the start but would of felt bad because I THOUGHT she was a nice person !! lol .. it's my own fault because I AM too nice lol .. And I totally AGREE with karma !! ..Have a great day !! 🙂
